New Permanent Carnivore Monitoring Program at the Parque Katalapi Nature Sanctuary
The Parque Katalapi Foundation has launched a carnivorous mammal monitoring program in the Parque Katalapi Nature Sanctuary.
This program aims to closely follow the main species of carnivorous mammals that inhabit the park, including pumas, guiñas, and foxes. Veterinarian Ismael Horta-Pizarro leads this initiative, which has installed 49 camera traps in different areas of Katalapi. Through this monitoring, the goal is to document the approximate number of individuals of each species, as well as their activity hours, hunting sites, and movement patterns.

At the same time, the Foundation’s Environmental Education team is developing educational materials to help schoolchildren and the community become familiar with these fascinating predators. By increasing their knowledge about these animals, both children and adults will be able to appreciate them more and, as a result, contribute to their conservation.
