University students from USA visit Katalapi during study trip to Chile
For the 2nd consecutive year, Katalapi Park hosted a group of North American university students as part of a Wildlands Studies’ study abroad program. The 4-day visit to Katalapi was the start of the students’ 6-week program in Chile, during which they will be studying the natural history of Northern Patagonia. The program was arranged by Present Patagonia, a local outfitter which collaborates with Parque Katalapi in environmental education activities.
Jason Angress, owner of the outfitter, said that Katalapi was an ideal place to begin the Wildlands Studies program because the setting allows students to easily become familiar with dozens of important species of native flora and fauna. With nearly 5 miles of trails throughout its 60-acre forest, wetlands and waterways, on-site housing and dining facilities, a classroom, laboratory and bilingual staff, Katalapi offers the infrastructure to fully support the students’ introduction to the ecology and environmental challenges of the Chilean temperate rainforest.
After leaving Katalapi, the Wildlands group embarks on a hike through several nearby river valleys, before visiting the Chiloé island and finally returning to Katalapi for a 3-day stay to reflect upon their experiences in Chile and present the results of their investigations.
